Friday 14th November 2025 - Macro Photography Session
Birley Moor Garden Centre 11.00am - 1.30pm
Learn about the macro world around you with expert tuition to take that perfect photo under the guidance of professional photographer Alex Hyde.
Thursday 6th November - Are you batty about bats?
Birley Moor Garden Centre 1.00pm - 3.00pm
This is the fourth of our Ecology for Beginners sessions. Julie Riley will be discussing the habitats, roosts and behaviours of our local bat species.
Saturday 25th October 2025 - Lantern Parade
Birley Moor Garden Centre 3.45pm - 6.30pm
We will be gathering at Birley Moor Garden Centre at 3.45pm and walking to Owlthorpe Community Orchard at 4.00pm with lanterns made at the lantern making sessions (or you can bring your own).
The lanterns will be hung on the apple trees as a celebration of all the fruit they have given to us this year. Spiced apple juice will be provided to warm you.
All welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult).
Saturday 25th October 2025 - Autumn Lantern Making
Birley Moor Garden Centre 10.00am - 3.30pm
This is the last of three sessions led by local artist Angie Hardwick, creating your very own lantern for our event celebrating the restored Community Orchard in Owlthorpe on the 25th October.
All materials and sessions are FREE to attend.
Wednesday 22nd October 2025 - Autumn Lantern Making

This is the second of three sessions led by local artist Angie Hardwick, creating your very own lantern for our event celebrating the restored Community Orchard in Owlthorpe on the 25th October.

Thursday 9th October 2025 - Autumn and winter birds of the region

This is the third session of our hands-on Beginners ecology course. Come and learn about the autumn and winter birds in Owlthorpe and the surrounding area.
Thursday 2nd October 2025 - Meadow mowing with our local council ranger, Nick Blood
Moorthorpe Gate Bottom Roundabout 12.30pm - 3.00pm
Come and join us and our local ranger, Nick Blood, in some meadow mowing and clearance to improve the health and biodiversity of the grasslands of Owlthorpe Fields.
We'll be meeting at the bottom roundabout on Moorthorpe Gate at 12.30. You can find the exact location here
Tuesday 16th September 2025 - Sustainability training event

Thursday 11th September 2025 - Brief introduction to invertebrates
Birley Moor Garden Centre 1:30pm - 3:30pm
This is the 2nd session of our hands-on Beginners ecology course and focusses on local invertebrates. Join ecologist Julie Riley on this short course comprising of 1hr classroom and 1hr walk in the Owlthorpe locality.
Saturday 6th September 2025 - Bat Walk in Owlthorpe
Meet at Owlthorpe Surgery roundabout at 7.45pm
Come and join us on Saturday 6th September for a bat walk around Owlthorpe. Led by Louisa from the South Yorkshire Bat Group, we will be bringing bat detectors for you to listen to the echo locations and learn about the different species of bat local to Owlthorpe. We will be meeting at Owlthorpe surgery roundabout at 19.45pm. All welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us for a hands-on Beginners ecology training courses. Five other monthly sessions are planned covering various ecological aspects.

Local expert and historian, Richard Godley will deliver an illustrated talk about the Women's Land Army from WW1 to WW2.
Wednesday 16th July 2025 - Oral history recording training session
Birley Moor Garden Centre 10:30-12:30pm
Learn the principles of recording local history stories from members of your local community at this FREE event. What, when and how to record the perfect archival standard recording.
